Spring is coming and that means time to check pre-launch checklists and inspect marine engine parts that may need replacement or repair.

The excitement and anticipation of getting out on the water can cause boaters to rush through a pre-launch checklist, but safety concerns and boat maintenance requirements make it necessary to carefully complete a checklist prior to launch. Any boater can use this valuable Volvo Penta pre-launch checklist to get a boat ready for the open water.

• Take the time to check the oil level and the condition of the oil before launching. If an oil change is necessary, complete it before turning on a marine engine.

• Flush your engine and any connected cooling ducts by using a hose to flush fresh water through the suction pipe. It is very important to keep fresh water available during the flushing process, and the engine should be allowed to run after the flushing to warm up and get rid of any sludge prior to launching the boat.

• All plugs must be closed.

• Volvo Penta Marine engines must be kept within an operating temperature range in order to work properly, so it is essential to have a working thermostat on the boat to check the temperature. Test the thermostat in a bowl of water that is heated along with a thermometer to determine whether the thermostat is working as intended.

A thermostat that is not functioning properly should be replaced.

• Impellers must be replaced either every two years or when they have been worn, whichever comes first. Be sure to use a new seal when installing a new impeller to ensure safety on the water.

• Check cooling and exhaust hoses to determine whether brittleness warrants a replacement. Clamps on hoses should be secured prior to launch.

• If a drive belt needs to be replaced, be sure to replace it with a Volvo Penta drive belt in order to increase useful life.

• Check for leaks in the fuel system by warming up the engine. For safety, turn the marine engine off if any leaks are found. Do not turn the engine back on until leaks have been fixed.

• Check and replace anodes, propellers and spark plugs as needed.

• Ensure that there are spare fuses on board in case of an emergency.
